Pinnacle Association Over the Hill Hike on July 12

posted Saturday, June 21, 2014

This is the big one. The Pinnacle Association's hike on Saturday July 12 from 9 AM to 2 PM will cover about 3.5 miles from north to south and will be led by Tony Coven, a Windmill Hill Pinnacle Association [WHPA] Board Member. It will feature Latham Trail, which starts out from Old Athens Road, a Class 4 road that is no longer formally maintained; so it's helpful to have a guide who knows the terrain. The journey will go past an old beaver pond and meander to the shelter at the Pinnacle, then back via Holden Trail, which is the Pinnacle Association's most popular trail.

Latham Trail is named after Jamie Latham, whose early death gave the impetus for the purchase of the Pinnacle lookout and was the inspiration for the Pinnacle's trail system and land-acquisition activities. Read more about the memorial on the WHPA website.

Participants should wear long pants to ward off ticks and bring water, bag lunch, snack, insect repellent, and sunscreen. Hikers should meet at Westminster West Church, 44 Church Street in Westminster West, to carpool. Please call Tony Coven at 802-387-6650 for information and registration. Visit the program link under events at www.windmillhillpinnacle.org for directions to Westminster West Church and information about other upcoming programs.
